Octobers here in southern California are a toss up as far as weather goes; we’re either still turning on the air conditioner or hoping that it won’t rain. This makes it hard for parents to hold a Halloween costume that will be weather-appropriate, especially if you’re the parent of a baby or toddler who is too young to have their heart set on a specific costume.

Last year was my daughter’s first Halloween and I decided to get her a costume that would maintain her warm in the event of cold weather. A very pouffy long sleeved, black crushed velvet suit with a bright pink peace sign on it along with gloomy crushed velvet pants. I figured that a warmer costume was a safer method to go, I’d rather her be a little warm than freezing cool. I’m glad I made the decision I did, we live advance the ocean and it was a bit chilly that night. Below are some recommendations for cold weather Halloween costumes for baby, toddler, girl, and boy.

This “pea in a pod” costume is perfect for baby’s first Halloween. It covers them up completely and will sustain them nice and toasty. Who wouldn’t want to carry around an adorable microscopic pea pod all night. Also, it has the added bonus of irony, dressing your child up as a vegetable on a night when sugary candy is considered gold.

Any young toddler will look adorable and stay warm in this “heirloom elephant” costume. Let’s face it, most baby/toddler costumes are either some sort of animal or festive fall object. What I liked in particular about this costume was that it’s solid grey and the elephant suit is easily replaced by plain grey clothing. Making this steal a winner for cold or warm weather.

Exiguous girls’ costumes don’t tend to be very accommodating in cold weather. Fairies, princesses, angels, butterflies, etc are usually made up of a sleeveless shirt and a short skirt. This “hippie girl” costume, in my opinion, was the cutest costume for girls that would also keep them warm while they hunt down that coveted Halloween candy.

Diminutive boys don’t usually have the costume issues that exiguous girls do. While any spiderman, batman, or other superhero or gruesome monster costume would keep them plenty warm on their sugar quest, I’ve picked this “future fisherman” costume. While being totally non-commercial, it’s also comprised of layers. So, as is, it’s perfect for cold weather, but should the weather be on the warmer side, you can adjust it with a shorts and a short sleeved shirt.
